Haapavesi Folk Music Festival is a special summer event held every year at the end of June, right after our Midsummer. It consists of a five-day long folk music course followed by a three-day long folk music festival.

The festival was founded in 1989 and the heart of the festival, the Folk Course, a few years earlier in 1987. The festival is organised by the Haapavesi Folk Association, with a small number of personnel and a large and important group of volunteer workers. The program of the festival consists of high quality folk music from all over the world, alongside with some classical, jazz, pop and cross-genre acts. Program includes also special seminars around e.g. Finnish literature and theater. Majority of the artists come from the Finnish folk music scene, but international artists have always been an essential part of the program. Scandinavian, Celtic and North American music are in the spotlight every year alongside with music from more exotic countries and cultures. Children have their own special afternoon program every year.

Teachers at the Folk Course come from Finland and abroad. The course offers an opportunity to learn foreign music cultures while also providing first-class guidance on various instruments. The course is targeted at all folk music lovers regardless of age.

Performer Applications

The program of Haapavesi Folk Music Festival is chosen by its Artistic director Teija Niku.

Booking starts every year in September and by the end of January the program is usually full. Many of the artists come by invitation only, but you can also apply to be considered as a performer at the festival. Keep in mind that we are a non-profit festival with minimal budget, and most foreign artists are required to also teach at the folk course during the week leading up to the festival. You can email your proposal to with sound & video samples. Please don’t add the address to your email list.

We get enormous amount of proposals every year, so unfortunately can’t respond to all emails.

Program 2019

The list of the artists 2019 and their website/MySpace/Facebook links are updated to the ”Esiintyjät”-page.

Haapavesi Folk Music Festival will be organized for the 31st time and it remains as one of the pearls of the Finnish festival season. Programme is filled with folk and world music along with music for children, jazz, rock and classical music.

The 33rd Haapavesi Folk summer course upholds the same values as the festival itself: internationality, high level of competence and diversity. Without the course there would not be a festival and vice versa. Many of the performers on stage are also giving lessons in the course. The summer course will be the 108th Folk course when all the courses since 1987 are taken into account.

The courses organized in the Haapavesi Folk High School will have teachers from different countries. Among the traditional instrument and singing courses there will be specialized courses on pair dancing, Laulunkieli-course and children’s course. The variety is broad from old music to pop and Swedish polska to American styles. Over 200 participants are to be waited for the courses. The most popular instruments are string instruments and violin. Children and families will have guided activities for the whole week.

The event’s art director 2019 is Teija Niku. Timo Hannula will be the course director.
